The transition to a more sustainable economy is creating good jobs in solar, EV charging, battery storage, and electrical trade in general. Yet people of color and women remain underrepresented in the clean energy sector.
The solution involves outreach in traditionally underserved communities to create awareness of the employment options available coupled with training programs to develop the skills to qualify for these clean energy jobs.
Based in Seattle, Sphere One is committed to advancing equity in clean energy sector jobs throughout the greater King County region. We partner with nonprofits, government agencies, utilities and local employers to increase the visibility of clean energy career opportunities in under-resourced communities.
Facilitated by a diverse staff, our programs offer three entry points to a green career pathway.
You belong here! Sphere One is out in the community engaging one-on-one with youth and adults underrepresented in clean energy to share the good news about the growing opportunities to get paid to make a positive impact on our health, climate, and prosperity. Come to an event and experience our hands-on demos to learn how green technology such as solar, battery storage and electric vehicle charging work together to reduce carbon emissions. With our diverse representation of staff and materials, we seek to foster a sense of belonging for all – BIPOC, female, nonbinary – to explore clean energy careers.
Past events:
What is clean energy anyway? Why does climate change matter? We facilitate workshops in primarily underserved communities to explore good green careers. These highly interactive workshops include hands-on, solar panel demos and computer-based simulations to witness the benefits of clean energy solutions firsthand. We also share the types of jobs available, qualifications required, and next steps to get the training, skills, and experience to qualify for careers as electricians, installation technicians, administrative coordinators and other clean energy professionals. Tailored to the age and background of the audience, our workshops take place at schools, community centers, our office – we’ll go just about anywhere in the greater King County area. Here a sample of where we’ve held clean energy career workshops in the past: Nathan Hale High School, Duwamish Valley Sustainability Association, Washington Middle School, Franklin High School, PACT, ANEW (Seattle), Suquamish Community Center ( Poulsbo), Oasis of Hope Community Center, Shiloh Baptist Church (Tacoma) More about our clean energy career workshops on our blog.
