Prior to 2024, a community of over 5000 residents in a Masai village in Kenya lacked a reliable supply of drinking water. Many are students of Oloolaimutia Elementary School who struggled with waterborne illnesses and walked for miles during the school day to fetch water. Edwin Wanji worked closely with the tribal council to develop a sustainable solution – a solar-powered well. After drilling a nearly 800 foot hole to the water table, a water pump was installed which is powered by a solar array. The solar-powered well requires minimal maintenance and taps into a free supply of clean water enabling a wonderful, enterprising community to improve their quality of life through sustainable farming, education for the children, energy resilience, better health outcomes and greater prosperity.
In 2017, Hurricane Maria swept through Puerto Rico causing severe damage to the electricity grid that powered the Ecológica Niños Uniendo al Mundo school. With the support of a grant from Solarize Puerto Rico, Sphere One installed a solar array to provide the school with access to energy regardless of grid disruptions. Training on the maintenance of the solar panel systems was supplemented by hands-on instruction on clean energy technology, electricity, and climate change. The future for these students looks more resilient.
Sphere Solar CEO Edwin Wanji returned to his home country of Kenya in order to provide a sustainable source of clean energy to a rural Maasai community. Solar panels and batteries were provided to each household, enabling them to power lights at night and charge devices with internet access so they could manage micro-loans and monitor commodity prices.
Sphere One partnered with the Cliff Avril Family Foundation to install solar panels at an orphanage in Haiti. Clean electricity now flows through the classroom outlets, running computers, projectors, and other electronic devices that the teachers use.
Your support will empower individuals from underserved communities to tackle climate change by increasing access to sustainable, zero-emissions electricity and clean energy job training.
